We were honored to participate in the Franklin, TN Senior Fair and Expo May 9, 2013. Not only did we forge new friendships with other vendors and findout information that will be valuable to pass along to our clients, but we met the nicest group of seniors ever. I was especially happy to see so many Veterans. As we went throughout the day, The James L. Clay Senior Center participants played music and serenaded us with beautiful song. For our deaf friends, there were sign language songs that the Seniors played. It was truly an uplifting day to see so many out and about, learning about the services offered throughout the community. I was honored to present Sitters Etc.'s information about our non-medical homecare services alongside our Marketing Coordinator, Lori Pickard. She is so knowledgeable in our field of caregiving and all aspects of non-medical homecare offered throughout Tennessee. Give her a call 615-587-3154 to schedule a free of charge in-home consultation. During that time, Lori listens to your needs and wants and develops a personalized care plan for you or your loved one, whether you need full time care or part time, personal care or just some light housekeeping. We can take care of your needs so you may spend quality time enjoying life!
The day was one filled with camaraderie, fellowship, singing, dancing, making new friends, playing Bingo and winning prizes! Sitters Etc. gave away a beautiful, fresh-smelling floral arrangement. As a member of the Westhaven community of Franklin, I took envelopes which held gift certificates to the businesses in Westhaven's Town Center: Artistry Spa Salon, Westwood Wine and Spirits, Freeman's Flowers, Ching's Asian Bistro and Oscar's Taco Shop. If you were the luck winner of any of the prizes, I hope you thoroughly enjoy using them as I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all of you! Maybe I will see you in one of the prize establishments!

Watch the video listed below from YOUTUBE. It will remind you to not take for granted all the sacrifices your parents have made for you and how you might take small steps in assisting them into the next phase of their lives.
Sometimes, you have to look for the little ways you can make moments with your aging mother or father special for both of you. It's no secret to those who live lives as daily caregivers that working daily and coming home after stopping by the grovery store and dry cleaners to prepare a meal and cleanup afterwards, only to be overwhelmed by the necessities of giving baths to the kids, going over homework, assisting your aging mother with bathing and dressing for bed, can be exhausting and stressful. It seems to become a monotonous task of life that never deviates and never ends. Let's find ways to add a little fun and love into those times so they become moments we can cherish.
Everyone loves music. Take a moment each evening after dinner and play someone's favorite genre over the speakers while you clean the kitchen. You may find people tapping their toes, or swaying to the beats! To be fair, let your little Suzy have her night of Disney music and your aging mother her night of ragtime. It will make a chore time a fun and more relaxing time for the family. Nothing like bonding while cleaning the house...helps the caregiver clean the house faster, too!
Walk in the door and greet your family with a heartfelt hug or smile. Compliment your aging mother about anything you think of. She will appreciate that you took notice of her. Keep in mind that as much as you feel the extra stress of caring for her atop all of your other responsibilities, SHE probably feels like a burden to you. Engage her more in eye-to-eye contact and offer to paint her nails, massage her neck, etc. Do things with her that encourage your relationship as mother/daughter, not mother/ caregiver.
Who doesn't like a present? Bring your mother a present when it is unexpected. She will take note that you took time out of your day to think of her while you were away. It can be the smallest of items, such as her favorite cookies, or a word finder booklet (which are great to build mental skills as one age). You'll feel great giving!
If you ever feel so overwhelmed that you need some assistance, or a weekend off to take a trip on your own, call our trusted non-medical homecare company, Sitters Etc. Studies have found that sensory games help with seniors who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia. These exercises promote well-being by reducing stress of seniors and helping their caregivers to realize the likes/dislikes of their loves ones.
Sensory skills of Sound
Play soft sounds of music to find out which sounds relax your loved one. Once you know if they like the sound of running water, birds chirping, light classical music, etc., you will have a method to calm your loved one if he/she becomes agitated. This is a tool Sitters Etc. trains our caregivers to utilize if our clients become anxious, agitated or aggressive.
Sensory Skills of Sight
These activities are very simple to do and work great with clients who have Alzheimer's or dementia. Show your loved one large pieces of construction paper. Use one color at a time. You may find they respond with a smile when they see their favorite color! If so, make sure they have something on the wall in that color. You can show them pictures of nature scenes if you like and check for the same reaction.
Sensory Skills of Touch
Give your loves ones many items to touch, such asbubble wrap, corduroy, smooth items, scratchy items, etc. Incorporate touching your client (very slowly at first) and see if they like to have a massage on their feet or their arms. You may find your love one especially likes the feel of fleece. Give them a fleece covered pillow to keep them comfortable. These stimulation games are fun and the touch of different items is endless in possibilities.
Sensory Skills of Taste
This game can prove to be fun for all involved! You can blindfold your loved one, if they will allow without becoming anxious, and see if they can tell you the correct name of the food you feed them. Many times, a poor appetite is not due to taste, but instead it is the texture of foods that inhibit proper eating. Try small bites of many differing foods and you will discover which ones your loved one enjoys eating.
Sensory Skill of Smell
The sense of smell can bring back wonderful memories of days long past. If your client is able, allow them to cook with you. Bake cookies or a cake with them. If they can't physically help on the kitchen, take the freshly baked items to them and allow them to smell. An easier method to stimulate the sensory skill of smell is to add aroma diffusers to the room. Smells can help to calm your loved one.
These ideas to stimulate the senses of our loved ones are simple and may prove very beneficial in exercising the mind and hopefully finding methods of relaxation for your loved ones. We encourage our senior clients to remain active in their homes with the assistance of our intensely trained caregivers. Personal interaction is always the best medicine to keep a happy client. Some holidays leave our senior citizens feeling lonely and forgotten. In this hectic world, we find ourselves with so much to do and so little time to do everything. Kids need to go to practice. Mom needs to stop by grocery store afterwards, Dad has a business meeting run late, etc. Then we have Grandmother sitting home alone all day...most every day...wishing she could see her family. Time is precious, but time spent with family is most valuable and memorable.
This year, take time to stop by your loved one's home and visit with them.
1) Surprise them with their favorite pie. *Our caregiver can help them eat it and put it away.
2) Take them to eat lunch at a restaraunt. *Our caregiver can accompany you to ensure your loved one maintains balance, mobility, etc.
3) Rifle through old photos and let them tell you all about the fun times of their lives. *Our caregiver like to do this with our senior care recipients not only to bond with their client, but to keep active the care recipient's memory skills and brain function.
4) Stop by to spend some time just sitting and talking about whatever suits your fancy. *Our caregiver can perform other duties while you are there, such as cleaning the home, meal preparation, run errands for the care recipient, etc.
Let's have a great holiday weekend, but let's include those who came before us and love us more than we know. Our moms, dads, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts and uncles may have aged, but they want to be part of the family still. Let Sitters Etc. help you enjoy your precious time with your loved ones by assisting in meal preparation, personal care and continence care, housework and medication reminders for your loved one. Sitters Etc. is proud to provide you a stress-free bonding time with your loved one as our caregivers provide quality, compassionate non-medical homecare to your loved ones.
How many of you have known someone age 65 or older whom has fallen? Unfortunately, most of us know a family member, friend or acquaintance whom has taken a tumble a time of two. There are preventative measures we should take ourselves and with our loved ones to ensure fall safety.
As people age, some fear that sharing with their family they are becoming unsteady on their feet means the kids will push for them to move into assisted living or nursing homes. If you are afraid to speak of this to your family member, you may certainly share your concerns with your physician. Your physician could assist you and help allay your fears of falling.
*One way would be to ensure you are maintaining muscle mass and proper movement through physical therapy exercises and a regular cardio program that suits your body's needs. This will strengthen/tone your muscles so you are stronger and more stable on your feet.
*A second idea could be that you have your eyesight checked so you have correct vision in walking and correcting any problems you may have by wearing bifocals, or other types of eyeglasses that suit you.
Unfortunately, falls do occur. If you fall, it is imperative that you inform your physician, even if you feel you did not suffer injury. Your medications and/or the dosages may contribute to your falls. It could be a sign that there is a problem with your body that needs to be attended (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.). Allowing your physician to know as much as possible about your fall will do more to help you prevent them in the future.
As always, you should check your home to ensure that you have taken steps to prevent falls. Remove rugs or other items that lie on the floor which could cause you to trip. If you walk through the house at night, turn on the lights and brighten the area. Add handrails to stairs and long hallways. Wear your eyewear. Walk on wooden, or tiled floors with rubber soled shoes.
Sitters Etc., a family-owned non-medical Homecare company, encourages all seniors and up and coming seniors to take the preventative measures listed above to ensure health and happiness in the home. If at any time you, or your loved one may need home care assistance, please feel free to give us a call. Our caregivers can assist you, or your loved one in walking through the home, whether it be to join everyone in the dining room for a nice lunch with the family, or to visit the restroom in the middle of the night. Our caregivers are trained to assist clients as needed with their mobility issues. Our clients' safety and well-being is a top priority for Sitters Etc. and we pride ourselves on the high level of home care assistance we provide throughout all of Tennessee and Arkansas and areas of Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi and Kentucky.
In today's society, Seniors are unfortunately at the mercy of scams artists in a way worse than ever. Many times, the scam artist criminals take advantage of Seniors because most Seniors are unwilling or hesitant to report to police or family members that they made a bad investment as they feel it will be taken as a loss of their ability to independently handle their personal and/or financial affairs. Other times, Seniors may not even realize they have been scammed.
To help protect yourself and your loved one, get familiar with these typical scams:
1. Guarantee of Miracle Cures Scams
Seniors experience more medical problems/conditions as they age. Many scams involve quick cures, or complete relief products that truly have no positive effects. Don't believe the "MIRACULOUS, FEEL BETTER" products will benefit you.
2. Investment Scams
Some seniors desire to add more to their financial legacy for their children or grandchildren as they age. This is certainly their prerogative. However, do not fall for investment opportunities that promise immediate and high returns. Many times, the scam artist will provide you stories of other Seniors whose family benefited from high investment returns and the story could not have been better written if it had been in a fairy tale. These are almost always falsehoods. Contact the Better Business Bureau in your area to check into any investment company you work with to ensure they are a valid and licensed agency.
3. Telemarketing Scams Do not accept telemarketing calls. The scam artists on the other end of the line will try to promise you the world and then take a "small contribution" from Seniors by attaining their banking information. Do not be surprised if the account is wiped out and shows a balance of $0.00 by the end of the next business day. These people could be calling you from a pay phone or a location in which they leave after one day of scamming. This makes it almost impossible for police to trace and prosecute the scam artists.
4. Health Insurance and Prescription Drug Scams Do not give out your insurance information to anyone besides the staff of those at your personal physician offices. Many scam artists will offer to provide you medical equipment, prescriptions, special tests, etc. All they need is your insurance information as they promise to bill it for you and that it will be covered in your policy without any charge to you. One month later, you are billed for out of pocket expenses to that scam artist because they lied about your coverage. Only trust your HEALTHCARE representative, or call your insurance company to verify coverage.
Take precautions to better protect yourself and your loved ones from the evils of scam artists. If you have any questions about how to contact the Better Business Bureau in your area, feel free to call Sitters, Etc. and we will be happy to assist you. We strive to ensure our Senior clients are protected at all times by training our compassionate caregivers to watch out for the above scenarios. Our goal is to provide the highest quality homecare in Tennessee and Arkansas to allow Seniors the opportunity to safely maintain their independence in the privacy and comforts of their own homes with the assistance they may need from our caregivers in personal care, homemaking, meal preparation, medication reminders, etc.
